A guide to Constellation Maps: what you’re looking at, what the connections mean, and how to explore a city at your own pace.
What does Constellation Maps do?
Constellation Maps is an interactive atlas for exploring the places and ideas that connect a city. Discover landmarks, cultural spaces, parks and gardens, neighborhoods, and company offices, then follow their connections to find somewhere new.
Which cities can I explore?
Tokyo is the only city available right now. Choose Tokyo in the city selector at the top of any page, or follow the Explore Tokyo link, to open its map.
What is the difference between City map and Knowledge graph?
City map places locations using approximate geographic coordinates and illustrative heights. Knowledge graph rearranges the same places into thematic clusters, making connections between categories easier to explore. Switching views keeps the same collection of places.
What do the connecting lines mean?
The lines represent curated thematic relationships or nearby places: for example, a museum and its neighborhood, two gardens, or companies in related industries. They are not train routes, walking directions, or claims of corporate ownership or affiliation. Open a place and choose one of its connections to explore the next place.
How do I find a place or learn more about it?
Search by a place or company name, neighborhood, or description. Toggle category layers to narrow the map. Select a point on the map or a place in the list to open its story, related places, and links to its official source and Google Maps. Close the description or tap an empty part of the map to return to exploring.
How do the map controls work on a phone or computer?
On a phone, drag with one finger to orbit, pinch with two fingers to zoom, and move two fingers together to pan. On a computer, drag to orbit, scroll to zoom, and Shift-drag or right-drag to pan. The plus and minus buttons zoom, the reset button restores the camera, and the orbit button turns automatic rotation on or off. On mobile, these controls hide while a description is open and return when it closes.
Is this a live navigation map?
No. This is an exploratory atlas with approximate positions, stylized buildings, and a curated selection of places. It does not provide turn-by-turn navigation, live transport information, or current opening hours. Each description includes an official-source link and an Open in Maps link for further information.
Are all listed company locations global headquarters?
No. The descriptions distinguish global headquarters, head offices, and local branches where applicable. For example, a company can have a Tokyo office while its headquarters is in another city. Follow the official-source link in a description for that organization’s own information.
Can I explore with the keyboard?
Yes. Use Tab to reach the city selector, FAQ, search, category buttons, place list, and map controls. Press / to focus search, Escape to close a description, and R to reset the camera when you are not typing. Focus the map canvas and use arrow keys to orbit, or plus and minus to zoom. The FAQ questions can be opened with Enter or Space.
